This is a REPAIR-and-RETURN service for the ECM (Engine Control Module) of the 2001-2005 Toyota Rav4 to fix harsh shifting problems (among other issues).
The 2001-2005 Toyota Rav4’s automatic transmission may show a harsh shifting behavior after some time, among other symptoms, caused by a failing ECM or ECU (Engine Control Module / Engine Control Units).

If you are experiencing issues with the transmission of your Rav4, DO NOT postpone the solution to this problem. Doing so may cause damage to the transmission. You are on time to service your ECM now before it is too late.
Repairing your ECM will solve the problem for good in most of the cases, but even when the damage extends to the transmission, the ECM must be repaired before using it with a repaired or replaced transmission.
We can successfully repair and reprogram your ECM in no time. In our experience, in 99% of the cases brought to us on time, the transmission problems were solved for good after servicing the ECM.
After you reinstall your ECM, NO PROGRAMMING will be needed. We cover units WITH and WITHOUT the immobilizer system (security system).
You may experience one or more of the following symptoms if you have a failing ECM:
- In most cases, the check engine light is off, and no error codes will show when scanned.
- When the check engine light shows, it often shows one or more of these error codes in a scanner: P0750, P0753, P0755, P0758, and P1760.
- Hesitation or harsh shifting, mostly from 2nd gear to 3rd gear.
- Slams into gear when putting it in reverse.
- Sometimes, the vehicle feels like it is braking by itself.
- Erratically shifts on an intermittent interval.
- A rattling or clicking noise from the engine area whenever the engine is running, even if the vehicle is in neutral or parking.
- Some days it fails, and some other days it works with no issues.
- The problem shows only when warm, only when cold, or only when first used in the day.
- After a complete stop, the moment you start moving again it feels sluggish, like towing a heavy load.
- Lower fuel economy than normal (consumes more gas than usual).
- As described by our customers, it literally felt like the transmission was falling apart.

This service covers ALL the 2001-2005 automatic Rav4 models. Examples are:
- Either AWD (all-wheel drive) or FWD (front-wheel drive)

Some common questions:
1. Wouldn’t it be better if the ECM is replaced by a new one?
Either brand-new or used (recycled) ECMs are causing similar problems. The brand-new ECMs fail in the long run, maybe after a couple of years, while used ECMs take way less than that, and both might need programming for your vehicle. On the other hand, the repair cost of the ECM is affordable compared to the price of a brand-new or used ECM that would fail again.
We can firmly and proudly say that this is one rare case where ordering this service is better than buying a brand-new part.
2. Do you repair only the transmission part of the ECM?
No. We offer the most complete service for these units, as we cover the whole unit, not just the transmission problem. This way, possible future problems, whether related to the actual issue or not, will be avoided. Your car may even have performance, emissions, or fuel economy issues right now that are so subtle that you are not aware of them. Those will also go away if caused by the ECM.
3. Do you actually repair or reprogram the ECM?
We do both. We repair the ECM’s circuit, and then it is reprogrammed.
4. Why send it to you for repairs?
This is a good question, considering the many competitors that have surfaced in the last few years and more importantly, the many different prices available, including lower prices than ours. Remember that when something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Nevertheless, we offer a very affordable price for all the value we put in and even run specials often. So, why us?:
- We first repair the circuit and replace any needed parts.
- We reset the ECM’s transmission adaptive system so it starts relearning from zero when it is installed back in the vehicle.
- If your vehicle is equipped with the immobilizer security system, we cover it too, ensuring that the engine will start when the ECM is reinstalled.
- As mentioned earlier on this page, we recondition the whole circuit to prevent possible future problems, related or not to the actual issue. The unit may have slight unnoticed problems, for example, problems that can make the car consume more fuel than usual. Those will also be taken care of.
- We check if a firmware update (software inside the microcontroller) is available from Toyota for your unit. If there is one, we do the update by installing the latest version available for your ECM (only possible for USA and Canada models).
- Finally, it is tested in an actual vehicle. This is done with the USA and Canada models. Japanese and European models will be bench-tested.
- We have vast experience with these units (15+ years) and know these ECMs very well. That experience allows us to take the best care possible with your ECM and provide solutions that work.
5. Will I have a tracking number when it is shipped back?
Sure thing! When you send your unit to us, as soon as we receive it, we will notify you and will also do so when it is completed, by sending the shipping details and tracking number. The notifications will be sent either through email or text (SMS) messages, or both (if you register a mobile number when ordering).
6. How do I know that this is not a scam?
Yes, we know, the Internet has turned into a huge mousetrap lately. But NO, we are NOT a scam. *** IMPORTANT NOTE ***
If your Rav4 does not engage in reverse AT ALL, at that point, it means that the ECM is undoubtedly damaged, BUT it also means that the damage went beyond the ECM, into the transmission. The ECM controls all the forward gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th) but it does not control the reverse. The reverse is purely mechanical.
Even when the reverse is sometimes affected by a damaged ECM not properly managing the transmission fluid pressures, like for example, bumping into gear when you put it in reverse, it is not directly controlled by the ECM. No reverse at all is a possible indication of an internal transmission failure, so the ECM must be repaired but so does the transmission.
If the above is your case, a repaired ECM must be in place if you plan to repair or replace your transmission. Otherwise, a faulty ECM will damage it again. In these cases, repairing your ECM will still be the first step to take.

I had really harsh shifting in my 2004 Rav for about a month. It got worse and more consistent. I brought it to 2 local shops. One guy “fixed something” for $500 that made no impact to the problem. The other shop wanted to put in a new $5k transmission (my rav has 280k miles….).
As a last ditch effort (this should have been my first step!) I did some internet research and found Richard. Initially I was very skeptical, but all of the symptoms of my car problem aligned with the descriptions here. So I gave it a try.

My 2005 Highlander was throwing a Check Engine/VSC code, which could have many causes, but that combination, thanks to the manufacturer disables some important components, resulting in bad engine and mileage performance. ECM is a common cause, and was what a mechanic told me after tracing the system. In the end, it wasn’t the ECM, but a buggy fuse for the evaporator (possibly corrosion) after another mechanic traced the entire wiring harness over two days. However, I wanted to take the time to leave a positive review here because of the excellent communication and information provided by Richard at Tech Domain. I cannot express how grateful I am to Richard and the service they provide. My 2002 Rav4 with 180K miles started to shift harsh from 1st to 2nd gear. I have kept up with trans fluid maintenance. Drained & replaced filter still no good. Tested all shift solenoids, all good. My problems started earlier this year and after using an awfull amount of money on local car mechanics to not solve the issue I decided to take the issue into my own hands and eventually found out it was the ECU that was the problem. I was experiencing an intermittent issue with the transmission shifting of my 2004 Toyota Rav4 AWD with A/T with less than 98K miles, particularly when coming to a stop and all of a sudden it felt like my car was getting hit from behind. I was also experiencing engine surging when at a stop and the car would idle above 2000 rpm. I referred my issues to Richard to see if they are related at all to the ECM problems with the 2nd Gen Rav4s. Richard was kind enough to respond and provide his analysis, even offering some suggestions not related to ECM repair. I had some follow-up questions and Richard replied promptly to each one of them, which is very impressive. The engine surging eventually went away without me really doing anything, but the transmission jerking remained. I decided to send my 17 year-old ECM to Richard for repair as a preventive measure, even though the jerking issue may not be related. There was an outrageous delay with the US Postal Service delivering the package to Richard, which is not under his control, but he repaired and returned the ECM to me promptly. I wanted to wait and drive the car for a while, before providing a review. Overall, my Rav4 is running well. I hope that I can keep driving it for a few more years. I highly recommend Richard for your ECM repair. He’s a real class act!

I have 2 rav4s 01 and 02. I sent my first ecm to Richard in 2015 and just sent my 2nd one. Great guy to work with! Always very responsive by email and very helpful in answering questions. I always tell other Rav owners I meet to use his service. Same with my mechanic. He didn’t know anything about the rav problems. This fixes all shifting problems. Its awesome. My ravs have 205k and 235k. Runs like a brand new car. Don’t bother with any other service in the States. Its worth sending to PR! You can find how to remove the unit on YouTube. Its easy with a few simple tools. 10mm socket and a very short phillips screw driver. The only problem is the 2 screws that hold the top bracket are super tight. Its a workout getting them loose. I used channel locks and some pressure to hold the short screw diver. Other than that was easy. Thanks again Richard. Great service!!

I bought my car used for only a couple hundred dollars because the previous owner had been told it needed a new transmission. I found this fix while researching transmission problems and figured I’d rather try this first. I use my car everyday. No problems.
Getting the unit out was the hardest part and that only took maybe two hours. I had my sister put it back in while I was on vacation. Too easy.

Hi, I am from Belgium (Europe). At first I hesitated a lot to send my ECU so far with the risk of loosing it … Also, I was not 100% sure of this service. I had almost all the problems with my RAV4 that were described … So I took the risk and removed the ECU, packed it very well and send it with tracking so I could follow my box. It arrived after 7 days. That day I got confirmation of Richard that my box had arrived. He also reeplied on my mails. 4 days later (with a weekend included) I already received my ECU back ! There was a note included that they had repaired it, reset it and tested it. I almost immediately installed in in my car and … it worked like new ! I’m a single mom who tries to repair things myself out of necessity. I bought a used 2003 Toyota RAV4 earlier this year and noticed issues of stalling and the vehicle surging forword between automatic first to second gear transitions. I was very worried wondering how I was going to pay for a new ecm and then wondering if it would even help. I knew the vehicle wasn’t safe to drive with these issues. Then I found Richard’s ecm repair service on the other deal as I google searched ecm repair. I sent my ecm to Richard in Puerto Rico. I got it back within a week, repaired and ready to go. I put it back in a few months ago, and I have had no issues since. I have been so happy and very relieved that my vehicle is working fine and is safe to drive with my children on board. I was so thankful it was something I could afford. I felt like I should get back on the site today and recommend this service. Most people seem to like to get on reviews to complain about something, but most people forget to say thanks when everything works out great. It was also the reviews on this site that helped give me the courage to go ahead and send in my ecu for repair. Don’t give up on your Toyota RAV4 because of ecm issues, send your ecm to Richard for repair, and you will not be sorry.

Like a few others, I was a bit apprehensive about trying this repair but I decided it was worth the risk given the alternatives. I got the ECM back the other day, installed it, and the car is working perfectly. Richard provided communication upon payment, receipt of the unit, and return shipment. Richard, I was hesitant & a little concerned about sending my RAV’s ECM off in the mail to get repaired but after reading all the positives & not finding negatives, I went for it with you guys and I have to tell you: I put the unit back in today & it drives BETTER THAN IT EVER HAS since I have owned it! You saved my a$$ & my tranny. You did what you said you would & when. The RAV actually idles better & shifts very smoothly. WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY ECM!!!!!!!!!!!!-!! I want to thank you for the MAGIC you performed on my ECM, i purposely do not send you a mail concerning this service until after 2 months or so, ever since i installed the repaired ecm, my rav got born again and its been at the top of performance ever since, initially i thought it could develop the same problem again, but its running better and better each day, no more noise, sudden breaks, ranting etc, i can now climb any hill without fear of loosing gear, im really grateful.

My car was behaving so weird, nothing was going well, car could not climb any hill and gallops on good road. The mechanic finally diagnosed it was the ECM that was faulty and no one could repair it out here in Cameroon. I researched online and met this company and i sent ECM to the US for them to repair it. My ECM was repaired, reprogrammed and tested before being shipped back to me. It worked perfectly well and my car is very ok now. Thank you very much Richard for saving my car.

I have been driving my 2003 Rav4 for a couple days now and could not be happier with your services. I was only on my second tank of gas since purchasing it when i discovered it had shifting issues. My cars symptoms were very occasional. Sometimes a slightly harsh shift from 2nd to third. A few times it started out from a stop in a higher gear. Twice i noticed extreme slippage when shifting into 3rd. So I parked it and found you on the web.
The car now shifts perfect in every situation. I had an occasional low, slightly rough idle which i did not realize initially was related to the ecm and that is fixed too. It seems I caught it early enough before it damaged the transmission so all looks good.
I also have to mention i was impressed with your professionalism as far as communication and how quickly you turned it around and got it back to me.
